Description
Tarentum. Circa 490-480 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 19 mm, 7.00 g, 6 h). ΤΑΡΑΣ Youthful oikist, nude, riding dolphin to right, holding cuttlefish in his right hand and extending his left; cable border. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Hippocamp right; below, scallop shell; rayed border. Fischer-Bossert 48 (V21/R38). HN Italy 827. Vlasto 105 (same dies). A beautifully toned example of fine late Archaic style. Minor scratches and the reverse somewhat double struck, otherwise, very fine.
